Benefits Guide

As described in our travel insurance guide, your Travel Insurance policy is essentially a series of policy benefits that provides cover for a variety of scenarios related to travelling. Below is a complete list of benefits that you'll find on Puffin Insurance policies. Please remember that this is just a brief description of the benefit and you should read the policy documentation to get a full description, including any exclusions and clauses, of the benefits.

Medical Expenses

Covers the cost of medical expenses incurred for necessary emergency treatment outside of the UK. Also covers additional travel, accommodation and repatriation costs for you and any other person that is required, for medical reasons, to be with you.

Cancellation

This covers the cost (up to the benefit limit) of your portion of any pre-paid transport (e.g. flights), accommodation, and additional travel expenses that you cannot recover from any other source (e.g. refund from the hotel) if you cannot travel due to injury, illness, redundancy or requirements of HM Forces.

Hospital Daily Benefit

In the unfortunate event that you are in hospital during your trip, this benefit will pay out an amount per 24 hours that you are in hospital (up to a maximum of the benefit limit)

Emergency Dental Treatment

This covers the costs (up to the benefit limit) of any emergency dental treatment you may need whilst travelling outside the UK.

Travel Delay

If your departure is delayed by more than 12 hours, this benefit will contribute towards the cost of additional parking, accommodation, food etc.

Personal Liability

If someone makes a legal claim against you (e.g. if you were to accidentally injure them or cause damage to their possessions), and you are found to be personally liable, then this benefit will cover the settlement costs (up to the benefit limit) plus any other costs incurred (e.g. legal).

Curtailment

If you need to cut your holiday short and return home (e.g. due to illness, or death of a close family member), then this will cover the losses incurred (up to the benefit limit) due to the unused portions of your transport and accommodation.

Abandonment

If your outbound flight is delayed for more than 24 hours and you abandon the trip this will cover the costs (up to the benefit limit) for flights and accommodation that cannot be recouped through other means (e.g. the airline refunding the cost of the flights)

Baggage

Cover for your baggage if accidentally lost, damaged or stolen whilst on your trip.  Single article limits apply.

Personal Money

Covers the loss incurred if your personal money is stolen (up to the benefit limit).

Missed Port Cover

This optional benefit provided cover for if, once your cruise has started, a scheduled port visit is cancelled due to adverse weather or timetable
restrictions and no alternative port can be offered

Unused Excursions

This optional benefit provides cover for unused pre-booked excursions which you cannot use because you are confined to your cabin due to an accident
or illness

Winter Sports Cover

This Optional Cover is required if you plan to take part in winter sports (skiing and snowboarding) during your trip. Where you have purchased an annual multitrip policy you are only covered for either 17 days of Winter Sports activity during the insurance period. Your limit will be displayed in your policy schedule. As well as ensuring that all other aspects of your policy remain valid, it adds the following cover:

  • Up to £500 to repair or replace equipment that has been damaged, lost, stolen
  • Up to £250 to hire replacement equipment in the event that yours is delayed (max £25 per 24 hours)

Gadget Cover

Included as standard on all policies up to £1,000 to cover your gadget while you're on your trip. Gadget cover will protect you for the costs of repair or replacing your gadgets if they are accidentally lost, stolen or damaged.  Please note your gadgets are subject to depreciation as they get older, and this may impact how much money you get back for your gadget.  

The gadgets we cover are mobile phones, iphones, tablets, ipads, e-readers/kindles, sat navs, handheld games consoles, portable DVD players, headphones, wireless speakers, digital cameras, laptops, ipods/mp3 players, go pros and smart watches.  This policy will not cover everything such as Drones.

If your gadget was bought new or is refurbished it must have been bought from a UK company and you have a proof of purchase, such as the receipt. If your gadget was a gift or bought second-hand then, in addition to a proof of purchase, we also need a signed letter from the original owner confirming you as the owner.

This optional additional cover increases your gadget cover by £1000, giving you a total cover of £2000.
