Benefits Guide

As described in our travel insurance guide, your Travel Insurance policy is essentially a series of policy benefits that provides cover for a variety of scenarios related to travelling. Below is a complete list of benefits that you'll find on Puffin Insurance policies. Please remember that this is just a brief description of the benefit and you should read the policy documentation to get a full description, including any exclusions and clauses, of the benefits.

Medical Expenses

Covers the cost of medical expenses incurred for necessary emergency treatment is outside of the UK. Also covers additional travel, accommodation and repatriation costs for you and any other person that is required, for medical reasons, to be with you.

Cancellation

This coves the cost (up to the benefit limit) of your portion of any pre-paid transport (e.g. flights), accommodation, and additional travel expenses that you cannot recover from any other source (e.g. refund from the hotel) if you cannot travel due to injury, illness, redundancy or requirements of HM Forces.

Personal Luggage

 

This covers the costs (up to the benefit limit) of personal possessions that are lost, stolen or damaged whilst on holiday. You can claim for:

  • Clothes
  • Luggage
  • Shoes
  • Cosmetics
  • Fine Jewellery and Watches
  • Electrical items
  • Eye-wear

Personal Money

 

Covers the loss incurred if your cash is stolen (up to the benefit limit)

Dental Services

 

This covers the costs (up to the benefit limit) of any emergency dental treatment you may need whilst travelling outside the UK.

Gadget Cover

 

Covers the costs to replace your gadgets (mobile phone, tablet etc.) if they are occidentally lost, stolen or damaged. Here's a summary of the cover levels:

  • Up to £750 for replacements gadgets (max £500 per item).
  • Up to £50 for CDs, games etc.
  • Up to £25 for unauthorised calls on your mobile phone.

Personal Liability

 

If someone makes a legal claim against you (e.g. if you were to accidentally injure them or cause damage to their possessions), and you are found to be personally liable, then this benefit will cover the settlement costs (up to the benefit limit) plus any other costs incurred (e.g. legal).

Curtailment

 

If you need to cut your holiday short and return home (e.g. due to illness, or death of a close family member), then this will cover the losses incurred (up to the benefit limit) due to the unused portions of your transport and accommodation.

Abandonment

 

If your outbound flight is delayed for more than 24 hours and you abandon the trip this will cover the costs (up to the benefit limit) for flights and accommodation that cannot be recouped through other means (e.g. the airline refunding the cost of the flights)

Personal Accident

 

A single payment in the event that you have an accident that results in death, loss of sight or loss of hands or feet.

Scheduled Airline Failure Insurance

 

Sometimes abbreviated to SAFI, this benefit will reimburse you (up to the benefit limit) for any amounts already paid to a scheduled airline (that you cannot recoup directly from them) in the event that they become insolvent before your departure.

Natural Disaster

 

Sometimes called Catastrophe cover, this will cover any reasonable additional costs (up to the benefit limit) of travel and accommodation in the event that a natural disaster (e.g. flood, fire) has damaged the accommodation that you had pre-booked.

Loss of Passport

 

If your passport is lost or stolen, this benefit will provide £50 towards emergency travel documents and £100 towards costs of collecting the emergency documents.

Legal Protection

 

In the unfortunate circumstance that that you get injured or die whilst travelling, and you wish to make a claim for compensation, then this benefit will cover the legal costs up to the limit of the benefit. It also includes 1/2 hour of legal advice on the telephone for enquiries relating to your trip.

Hospital Daily Benefit

 

In the unfortunate event that you are in hospital during your trip, this benefit will pay out an amount per 24 hours that you are in hospital (up to a maximum of the benefit limit)

Travel Delay

 

If your departure is delayed by more than 12 hours, this benefit will contribute towards the cost of additional parking, accommodation, food etc.

Winter Sports Cover

 

This Optional Cover is required if you plan to take part in winter sports (skiing and snowboarding) during your trip. As well as ensuring that all other aspects of your policy remain valid, it adds the following cover:

  • Up to £500 to repair or replace equipment that has been damaged, lost, stolen
  • Up to £250 to hire replacement equipment in the event that yours is delayed (max £25 per 24 hours)
  • Up to £200 if you're unable to ski due to lack of snow (£20 per full day)
  • Up to £150 for additional transport and/or accommodation if you're unable to access your pre-booked resort due to avalanche (£15 per full day)

Cruise Cover

 

This Optional Cover is required if you plan to go on a Cruise holiday. As well as ensuring that all other aspects of your policy remain valid, it adds the following cover:

  • Up to £500 of travel expense to reach the next overseas port if you miss your departure due to vehicle breakdown, accident or public transport delays
  • Up to £750 if ports are skipped due to adverse weather conditions or cruise timetable restrictions (£50 per port)
  • Up to £500 if you are confined to your cabin or a state hospital due to illness during your cruise (£50 per day)

Golf Cover

 

This Optional Cover specifically covers your golf equipment plus a number of other golf related benefits:

  • Up to £1500 for the cost of equipment repair or replacement should yours get damaged, stolen or lost (max £500 per item)
  • Up to £400 to hire golf equipment if yours is lost, stolen or delay on your outward journey (max £50 per day)
  • Up to £400 for the loss of green fees should your pre-booked course become unplayable due to weather conditions (max £100 per day)
  • Up to £100 for costs incurred if you achieve a hole in one

Business Cover

 

The Business Cover option ensures that all aspects of your policy are still valid if used to cover a business trip as well as adding a number of business specific benefits:

  • Up to £1000 to replace business equipment that gets damaged during your trip (limited of £500 for personal computer).
  • Up to £500 of transport costs to replacing business samples if lost or stolen on our outward journey (max £150 per 24 hours)
  • Up to £500 for the loss or theft of business cash during your trip
  • Up to £1500 for travel costs of a replacement employee, or for you to reschedule, in the event that you can't attend due to hospitalisation or necessary curtailment of the trip

Wedding Cover

 

If you're enjoying your happy day abroad, this Optional Cover will ensure that all the extra things you bring with you for a wedding are covered. Cover includes:

  • Up to £500 for the loss or damage to your wedding rings (max £250 per ring)
  • Up to £1500 for the loss or theft of wedding gifts (max £200 per gift)
  • Up to £500 for reprinting of lost or damaged photo/video or to re-book a photographer should the original photographer be unable to provide the photography service
  • Up to £1500 to repair or replace wedding dress/outfits should they get lost or stolen (max £300 per item)
